Case Study: FIFA World Cup 2026 on M6+

Between 11 June and 19 July 2026, M6+ streamed 54 FIFA World Cup matches across 39 consecutive days – one of the largest live streaming operations ever run in France. Here is how Bedrock built for it.

The tournament in numbers

  • 54 live matches powered on M6+ over 39 days
  • 60 million people in France followed the competition on M6 and M6+
  • 1M+ concurrent streams, surpassed on three occasions
  • 60K viewers arriving within a single minute at peak
  • 4M+ new users registered on M6+
  • 8x arrival capacity validated above the observed peak
  • 100% of scheduled automated scaling events completed successfully
  • Zero major platform incidents affecting overall delivery

Built for peaks, not for one big night

With live sport, the hard part is not the size of the audience but the speed at which it arrives. The goal was never to survive a single record-breaking evening. It was to deliver the same experience at every peak, from the opening match to the final, without rebuilding the operation around each fixture.

Most of the work happened before kick-off

Ahead of every match, the parts of the platform most exposed to sudden traffic were scaled automatically, so capacity was in place before viewers arrived. Programme managers created, scheduled and followed each event from a single interface, comparing forecasts against real-time audience levels and adjusting live when a kick-off moved or a match ran into extra time.

Before the tournament, Bedrock load-tested arrival rates of around 500,000 users per minute – more than eight times the highest rate actually observed – while our FinOps team tracked usage and cost throughout, so that headroom never came at the expense of control.

One platform, one ecosystem

Scale at this level is never the work of one team or one technology. Bedrock and M6 operated within a shared framework covering product, video, applications, identity, data, payments and platform operations, extended beyond M6+’s own apps to ISP platforms and set-top box distribution routes. The technology partners sat inside that same preparation, monitoring and escalation model before the opening match: AWS for reserved capacity on the highest-stakes fixtures, Fastly for edge delivery, EASE Live for the interactive layer around the stream, NPAW for a shared view of quality of experience, and New Relic and Solo.io for observability and gateway routing.

Over 39 days, live sport delivered the unexpected. Because monitoring and escalation paths were shared and rehearsed across every team and partner, those moments were absorbed before they reached the stream. For viewers, the work stayed invisible – and that was the point.

The 2026 World Cup was an exceptional moment for M6+: 60 million people in France followed the competition on M6 and M6+, and we surpassed one million simultaneous streams on three occasions, with no major incident across all 54 matches. Throughout the tournament, our priority remained the same: delivering the best possible experience to our audiences, with complete confidence in the technology powering M6+. Bedrock’s robustness, its teams, its technology and its partner ecosystem, was instrumental to this success. Together, we have proven that M6+ is built for the biggest moments. And this is only the beginning!
